It’s time to introduce the 2022 Jury for the AIA Maryland Excellence in Design awards program!
This year, the jury comes from AIA South Carolina. The Chair, Jennifer Charzewski, AIA, is a Principal at Liollio Architecture in Charleston and she has brought together a great group of architects to review your submissions.
Jennifer Charzewski, AIA – Jennifer Charzewski is a Principal at Liollio Architecture, an award-winning design studio recently celebrating 65 years of practice in Charleston, SC. A graduate of Texas A&M and the University of Minnesota, Jennifer believes developing the vision and inspiration of a project through public engagement brings integrity and clarity to architecture and a building’s ability to play a key role in shaping a community’s future. Jennifer’s recent award-winning projects include Charleston Fire Station #11, Ballentine and St. Andrews Libraries, James Island Town Hall, St. Helena Branch Library in Beaufort SC, the Charleston International Airport redevelopment and new SC Welcome Centers at Fort Mill and Hardeeville. Jennifer is currently working on a GSA Design Excellence project in Preservation for Tomochichi Federal Courthouse in Savannah, GA and a new Discovery Place Museum in Charlotte, NC. A past-president of AIA Charleston and ACE Mentor, Jennifer has recently served as SC Equity in Architecture Committee Chair, taught a “firm studio” at Clemson’s Architecture Center in Charleston, and serves as a NAAB Visiting Team Member for accreditations across the country. She has presented at the Raleigh Urban Design Conference, multiple Library Design Institutes, the South Carolina Library Association, and has served on several design awards juries throughout the southeast.
Jarret Hudson, AIA – An architect at McMilan Pazdan Smith, he is involved in mixed use/multifamily/hospitality work. Jarret also does healthcare and higher ed projects.
Amalia Leifeste – Amalia Leifeste is an associate professor for the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation co-sponsored by Clemson University and the College of Charleston, in Charleston, SC. She is an architect and brings that disciplinary background, as well as educational training in sustainable design and historic preservation, to the rich medley of faculty in the graduate program. Amalia’s research agenda revolves around fostering a sustainable building culture and sees preservation practice as essential to any serious view of sustainability. In research and through her teaching role she is interested in how we educate practitioners, how place fosters group identity, and in defining how much and what kind of change can keep buildings useful for current needs without erasing essential touchstones of meaning for people who care about their historic places.
Joel Wenzel, AIA – Joel leads the Thomas & Denzinger Charleston studio that does a lot of custom residential projects on the sea islands.
Bria Wigfall, Assoc. AIA – Senior Associate Bria Wigfall, a recent graduate of UNC Charlotte with both a Master of Architecture and a Master of Urban Design, also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Clemson University. As an Emerging Professional in LS3P’s Columbia, SC office, Bria brings a unique perspective to projects with her understanding of planning and the built environment. Bria is dedicated to promoting community involvement throughout the design process, ensuring key stakeholders are involved from start to finish. Encouraging the next generation of designers is a passion Bria follows through her work with AIA Columbia and the ACE Mentor Program in the Columbia, SC area. With 8 years in the industry, Bria’s warm disposition and sharp aptitude for the profession make her an invaluable team asset.
Karo Wheeler, AIA – Karo graduated from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, Germany with a Master of Arts in Interior Architecture in 2007. Karo began her career in Copenhagen Denmark and after graduation, she moved to Sydney, Australia, where she worked as the lead designer for various large-scale residential and mixed-use developments. She later relocated to Charleston, SC where she continued her design career working on commercial, hospitality, multi-family, academic and mixed-use projects at the designer, project manager and associate levels. She now works as a Senior Project Manager with The Middleton Group and serves as an alternate member at Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review.
