The AIA Maryland Excellence in Design Awards program recognizes excellence in architectural design by AIA Maryland architects worldwide and AIA member work in Maryland. This annual awards program provides member architects an avenue for peer recognition and honors the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to improve the built environment. Through this program, AIA Maryland hopes to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement and raise public consciousness of the Architect’s role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence in the community

MEET THE JURY
Lindsey Love, Assoc. AIA [Chair]
Lindsey is committed to incorporating natural and raw materials wherever possible in any project. She specializes in determining when, where, and how these materials can be the most appropriate and beautiful solution. She has balanced her design career with many seasons of construction work doing everything from framing to fine plastering, electrical work and management. Also an educator, Lindsey has led natural building workshops in North Carolina and was a visiting lecturer at Universidad de Valle de Mexico. She has a fierce belief that design makes and breaks communities and has substantial experience with tribal affordable housing.
Lindsey is currently in the process of taking exams for licensure in Idaho. In the winter, Lindsey is the high school nordic ski coach and in the summer she loves to trail run and backpack.
Cynthia Fishman, AIA
Cynthia is the founder and Director of the Biomimicry Design Alliance (BDA), a research and architecture consulting group consisting of designers and scientists from the Denver, CO area that focus on making biomimicry accessible to the design community. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from Rice University in Houston, TX and earned her Master of Science in Biomimicry from Arizona State University. Ms. Fishman is also an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning and at the Ecosa Institute at Prescott College, teaching lecture and studio classes about biomimicry. In 2015 she was awarded the AIA Colorado Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to the architectural profession, was named one of Engineering News Record (ENR) Mountain States Top Young Professionals in 2018, and was a recipient of AIA National’s Young Architect Award in 2019.
Anni Tilt, AIA
Anni Tilt is a principal of Arkin Tilt Architects, an award-winning firm in Berkeley, CA. Winner of the Acterra Business Award for the Sustainable Built Environment in 2020, 2016, and 2002, the 2011 Cool California Small Business Award, and numerous design awards, their work has been published nationally and internationally for excellence in design and sustainability. With a BSE in Civil Engineering from Princeton University, and a M Arch from UC Berkeley, Anni has always been interested in the intersection of architecture, engineering and ecology.
Anni was previously on the board of the Ecological Building Network, and was one of the founding members of the California Straw Building Association (CASBA). She is currently a board member of the West Berkeley Design Loop, and the coordinator of the People’s Egg Co-op
Bob Harris, FAIA
Bob Harris leads Lake/Flato Eco-Conservation studio. He has nearly three decades of project experience combining award-winning design with sustainable solutions. His passion for environmental issues ranges from land preservation advocacy to sustainable urban design. As a persistent innovator, Bob seeks to push sustainability in new directions, finding beauty in solutions and regionally-based designs that elegantly do more with less. His work includes the popular Hotel San Jose in Austin, TX; Naples Botanical Garden Visitor Center in Florida, and the Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, MS.
Joeseph Kunkel, Assoc. AIA
Joseph, a citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Nation, is the Director of MASS Design Groups’ Sustainable Native Communities Design Lab in Santa Fe, NM. As a community designer and educator, he is working on a growing portfolio of work in Indian Country focused on the research, design, and construction of exemplary Native American Indian housing nationwide. This work has developed into emerging best practices, and online affordable housing development tools, funded by the Department of Housing & Urban Developments’ Policy, Development, and Research Office. From 2013-2016, Joseph led the development of a 41-unit low-income housing development, supported by National Endowment for the Arts and ArtPlace America funding. In 2019, Joseph was awarded an Obama Foundation Fellowship for his work exploring transformational change that aligns with indigenous values and honors the worldviews of Indigenous populations. As a 2019 Civil Society Fellow, and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, Joseph is working towards developing lasting impact within American society where Indigenous peoples have a seat at the table. Joseph is a recipient of the Rauschenberg SEED award, Creative Capital Award, and Enterprise Rose Fellowship.
